Fish-Cake?

Am I the only one in the world who is not completely enamored with Naruto? I've seen a good portion of the anime, both japanese and english dubbed, and I just don't get why everyone likes it so much. It really didn't catch my interest enough, but that's just me. Even the parts that made everyone laugh out loud, only made me chortle slightly.

I can think of a couple of other animes that have a HUGE fanbase that I've seen and that I just don't like that much.

Discussion time!

What are some animes out there that everyone but you seems to like?

  1. I'm actually not entirely sure how to answer that question to tell you the honest truth. I don't really think there has been a series with an enormous fanbase that I haven't liked.

The only one that seems to come to mind is Neon Genisis Evangelion, which I personally found to be slopy, boring and confusing. I didn't even feel for any of the characters like what most people seem to say is so great about it all the time. But even then there were at least SOME things I liked about it anyways. Mostly just the mech designs and some of the ways certain things were animated, as well as how cool some of the Eva battles were sometimes, but that's about it.

  2. I have never really cared for One Piece. It is Big here, it is HUGE in Japan (being the current top seller on the manga lists at least), but I could never get into it. Dubbing was not an issue. It was just a boring story to me.

And as for Naruto, I can say I got into it and fell out of its hype before it even hit the USA.

  3. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

I agree with you on Naruto as well. There were few episodes I genuinely liked.

  4. Also, Death Note. I can see why everyone else likes it; it's just not my cup o'tea.

  5. Woot! I really did get some responses from this! That's what I was going for. I've thought of one other anime that has a pretty big fanbase that never really struck my fancy. Gundam. I've seen episodes, and they just never hit the right chord with me. I know, it's blasphemous to say this, but I've never been big into that show.

  6. Grave of the Fireflies is the first one to come to mind for me. Don't understand why so many people herald it as one of the greatest anime films ever made. Good film, but certainly not great. Tearjerker, my foot.

Another is Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei. Funny as hell? Hardly.

Can't think of any others right now, save for the mainstream titles Bleach and Naruto. Really, really like One Piece though and the FIRST season of Code Geass was enjoyable. Death Note was fun while it lasted too, but nothing to write home about either.

  7. I guess you could say Death Note is also another one for me as well. It's hard to say because I really, really liked it. I just don't really see why people go flaunting it as this masterful work of art or anything like that. I mean I can sort of see it in the sense that it does indeed move away from the typical shounen fare, but that's about it really. And even then SOME of the typical shounen fare series I actually find to be better than Death Note anyways.

  8. @Jay Gee: I've heard from several people that Grave of the Fireflies was amazing, but I've never seen it. Maybe I won't see it anyway.
@Jay Gee & BroEl: So many people I know are absolutely in love with Death Note, but I've seen parts of it, and I just don't get it. It's cool and all, but I've definitely seen better animes than it.

  9. @Bryson: Yeah, I heard so many people praise GotF that I ended up less than impressed upon actually viewing it. Don't let what I said stop you from watching it though. I'll never buy it, but it is still worth seeing at least once. Besides, my opinion on the film being not all that great is quite uncommon as it is.

  10. @JayGee: I dunno. I've agreed with your opinion on most of the things you've posted on your blog. I think I might still look it up and watch it, just to see what it's like.
